【Course Objectives】

The primary goal of this course is to explore the historical development of dominant social media platforms (e.g. YouTube, TikTok) from the 2000s to the 2020s and their on-going relationship to cultural practices.

This course will propose the idea that social media has become a predominant form of communication and as a result has become "home" to cultural practices: it creates new slang, trends, relationships, beliefs, values, and political perspectives.

The secondary goal of this course is for students to consider and critique this argument thoroughly. Do apps shape our culture, or does our culture shape our apps? In the 2020s, can we imagine culture without social media? Many platforms come from the USA - do they 'export' American culture to other countries? Or are they shaped in turn by new cultural contexts? What about apps originating in other countries - Weibo from China, LINE from Japan, Spotify from Sweden - do they 'export' distinct cultural values?

【Course Contents】

The course is organized chronologically and by-platform. That is, it starts with early social media (LiveJournal, Youtube), and ends with the most recent popular platforms (TikTok, BeReal). Each platform is explored as a structure that creates distinct (sub)cultures and practices. Each platform discussion will be paired with relevant critical theories to help expand and deepen discussion of platform dynamics and influences.

There will be a midterm examination and final examination. There is a final essay assignment in which students write essays on one of three provided prompts.

Homework will consist of (1) reading assignments (e.g. academic articles) and (2) written reflections at the end of each unit.
