Notes

【Course Objectives】

• Students will understand the intersections between Communication Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
• Students will explain how social norms related to gender and sexuality are constructed and resisted.
• Students will engage in collaborative and inventive discussions to evaluate real world case studies.
• Students will implement critical theories to understand gender and sexuality in a variety of situational, national, and cultural contexts.
• Students will synthesize, design, and present their own arguments related to gender and sexuality.

【Course Contents】

This course is designed to investigate the intersections between Communication Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. We will understand gender and sexuality to be inextricable from power. Therefore, we will discuss gender and sexuality in relation to themes including race, ethnicity, class, nationality, and culture. Class sessions will alternate between learning theory and applying theory to various real world case studies. Class discussions and case studies will foreground contextualization to resist copy-pasting Western theory to a non-Western context. Students will collaborate on public facing (digital humanities) projects to apply their learning beyond the classroom.
