the course objectives are to gain knowledge on how both American and Japanese poetry can be quite controversial; be able to critically view how Japanese artistic culture has influenced American aesthetics; to learn to write original poetry based on examples from the course
in this course, we will focus on these poetic and controversial topics:
-how the avant-garde developed the form of Haiku outside Japan (Allen Ginsberg & Jack Kerouac)
-the poetry of Marichiko
-bareku
-the poetry of Sakutada
-Geigo by Yamamura Bochō
