【Course Objectives】

This course aims to provide students with a fundamental understanding of legal studies. The course will introduce students to the history of law, different legal approaches, divisions of law, and how to analyze legal issues from different perspectives. The discussions will cover theoretical problems, doctrinal approaches, historical developments, and social issues. By understanding the principles of legal thinking, students will develop critical and logical thinking skills relevant not only to their academic life but beyond the university as well.

This course begins by exploring the history of law and its evolution, offering students a contextual framework to understand how society has shaped legal systems over time. After, the course explains the meaning of the rule of law and the differences between civil law and common law. The course then delves into the main areas of law, such as contracts, criminal law, and other key fields, ensuring that students gain a broad perspective on the divisions of law and their practical significance.

A central component of the course is to familiarize students with the meaning of law and different legal approaches, including theoretical frameworks, doctrinal analysis, and practical applications. By encouraging the analysis of legal problems from multiple perspectives, the course encourages an environment where students can appreciate both the practical and theoretical approaches to law.

Through this exploration, students will develop critical thinking skills indispensable for solving legal issues. These skills are important not only to enhance academic capabilities but also to prepare students for real-world challenges beyond the university.

In summary, this course aims to help students:
a) Have a general introduction to law, including an overview of the main legal areas.
b) Gain basic legal knowledge of legal studies, including the history, principles, and divisions of law.
c) Develop the ability to analyze issues from a legal perspective
d) Enhance critical and logical thinking skills.

【Course Contents】

This introductory course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental legal concepts and principles. Through the exploration of legal history, the rule of law, and the distinctions between civil and common law systems, students will gain insight into the evolution and structure of legal systems worldwide, with a focus on common law. The course will delve into the various branches of law, including contracts, torts, criminal law, property law, constitutional law, and administrative law, offering students a broad overview of the diverse areas of legal practice and jurisprudence. The course will also engage debates on thorny legal issues and question the foundations and sources of legal systems worldwide. Students will have the opportunity to think from the origins of our more basic institutions and legal reasoning in history to the current debates on different legal areas. Finally, students will delve into the role of courts and lawyers in Japan and throughout the world.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a solid foundation in legal theory and practice, enabling them to critically analyze legal issues, understand the role of law in society, and appreciate the complexities of legal systems worldwide.

The course is an introductory course, and no prior legal background is required. The course will also seek to accommodate students whose English is not their first language. Everyone is welcome to join and participate.

This course is open to everyone. As it is an introductory course, no prior legal knowledge is necessary. First-year students, upper-year students, and exchange students are all encouraged to join. The instructor is committed to accommodating and supporting students who may feel unsure about their English language skills.
A suitable English language proficiency level is a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
