For ICGL and DLP students |
This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the multifaceted concepts of 'local community' and 'sustainability' and of the complex interrelationships between them within the context of tourism development. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to engage analytically and reflexively in academic debates on the impacts of tourism on local communities worldwide. They will also be able to situate their own communities within this global framework and to apply theoretical and empirical insights to the identification and resolution of contemporary challenges associated with tourism development.
The course introduces students to a range of theoretical perspectives and empirical case studies in tourism and local community research across diverse national and international contexts. Students will critically examine the reciprocal impacts of tourism and local communities through multidisciplinary lenses, including sociology, with particular emphasis on the conditions under which tourism may coexist with local communities and contribute to sustainable community development.
This will be a student-centered, interactive course with in-class discussions, collaborative group or pair activities, and presentations. Each session is designed to provide opportunities for students to articulate and critically reflect upon their own experiences and viewpoints. Students will be encouraged to connect course concepts to the realities of their own communities through structured reflection papers and presentations. Audio-visual materials and online resources will be integrated to enhance and deepen the learning experience.
