As indicated in the curriculum map of the College of Intercultural Communication, the primary objective of this course is to enable students to deepen their understanding of English-speaking regions by studying literature written in English and by reflecting on human experiences as expressed in poetry, novels, and drama. Through this process, students are expected to develop the ability to analyze and discuss literary works critically.
This semester, the course will focus in particular on poetry. It has two goals:
1) Students will be able to understand the various uses of the English language in poetic works as well as their cultural contexts, and
2) to articulate their interpretations of the texts and share these insights with others.
The course will proceed as follows:
* Students will read and analyze one relatively short poem in English over a period of one to two weeks.
--Before each class, students are required to complete the assigned preparatory work and submit it to Canvas LMS by the designated deadline.
--In class, students will give short presentations based on their preparatory work, and the class will work together to develop an understanding of the poem.
* After completing the analysis of the first poem, students will write a practice short essay and learn what it means to write a short academic essay.
* Students will then read and analyze four additional poems over a six-week period.
* From these four poems, each student will choose one and write a short essay on it.
* Based on this essay, students will give a class presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.

授業は日本語で行いますので、日本語を理解できることが必要です。
ただし、日本語での発信が苦手な受講生は、他の受講生が理解できるように配慮するならば英語による小論文や発表などをしても構いません。
オンライン授業なので、それに対応する機器が必要です。授業における資料の配布や課題の提出は Canvas LMS を使用します。
異文化コミュニケーション学部のカリキュラムマップにあるとおり、本科目の大きな目標は、受講生が英語圏の文学について学び、詩、小説、戯曲などに表現される人間の営みについて考えることにより、その地域への理解を深め、文学を批評的に分析し論じることができるようになることにあります。
本学期は特に詩作品に焦点を当てます。目標は２つです。
１）詩作品における、英語という言語のさまざまな使い方や、作品の文化背景を理解する。
２）作品についての考察を言語化し、それを他者と共有することができるようになる。

授業の流れは次のとおりです。
・一つの短めの英語詩を1-2週かけて読解します。
・授業までに、指定した予習を行い、それを授業までの指定日時までにCanvas-LMSに提出。
・授業にて、その予習をもとに発表をしてもらいながら作品を理解。
・一つ目の詩の読解を終えたところで、試しに小論文を書き、小論文を書くとはどいうことかについて学びます。
・さらに4つの詩を 6週かけて読解します。
・この4つの詩から一つ選び、小論文を書きます。
・この小論文をもとにクラスへの発表＋質疑応答をおこないます。
