【Course Objectives】

1. We will examine the history, teachings and transformations of three world religions (Christianity, Islam and Buddhism) and of Judaism, which has a significant influence on Christianity and Islam, and discuss issues associated with these religions.

2. We will examine religious phenomena in Japan and their background influences from ancient Chinese philosophy and Korean folk beliefs (and also discuss possible influences from the Middle East).

【Course Contents】

"We will learn how three world religions (here referring to Christianity, Islam and Buddhism, and at the beginning of the course we will look at Judaism as the background to the birth of Christianity) came into existence and how they were transformed by fusion with regional cultures.
While religion has formed the foundation of many people’s lives, it has often caused discrimination and attacks against people belonging to different religions and/or denominations (though in many cases religion is not the only cause of conflicts). We will discuss why these discriminations and attacks caused by (or thought to be caused by) religion show no sign of ever ceasing, although we know the importance of open-mindedness and tolerance. We will consider the issue of whether each of the following pairs are compatible: faith and open-mindedness; laïcité and religious freedom; science and religion.
In the last two sessions we will look at Japanese religions (including folk beliefs and Shugendo, mountain asceticism incorporating Shinto and Buddhist concepts) along with background influences from ancient Chinese thought and the Korean folk beliefs.
Throughout this entire lecture series, we will consider what it means to believe in something (or have a religious faith). Also, we think about what it means to understand people with a different belief or value to your own (or whether this is possible at all). (Please note the course schedule below is only a guide.)"
