【Course Objectives】

This course aims to understand various language needs in multicultural societies, focusing on how translation and interpreting support community and public services, particularly in healthcare and legal settings. It also explores the challenges and increasing needs for community interpreters as a profession.

【Course Contents】

This course introduces unique characteristics of translation and interpreting in community and public services, with a focus on legal and healthcare settings. Additional topics include current issues in interpreter training and the consequences of failing to provide timely access to quality interpreting in community settings. Students will also have the opportunity to learn directly from practitioners, including the challenges they face in the field. Toward the end of the semester, students will prepare and deliver a presentation on language needs within a specific community or institution (e.g., local government offices, courts) based on field research.

【授業時間外(予習・復習等)の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

At Rikkyo University, students are required to spend 45 hours of study (including class time) per credit. Please prepare for classes and review the materials accordingly.
Students are required to complete reading assignments before each class and be prepared to present their findings during weekly class discussions. Additionally, students will work individually or in groups to prepare for translation and interpreting exercises that will be conducted during Weeks 5 and 8. This involves studying the communicative purpose of interpreted events in medical and legal contexts, developing bilingual glossaries of key terms for use during the exercises, and conducting research on the ethical principles that govern the practice of the profession.

Your class attendance and participation are critical components of this course. Even if circumstances require your absence, you will still be required to attend at least 2/3rds of the classes. If you do not attend this number of classes, you will receive a failing grade for the course.

【履修にあたって求められる能力 / Abilities Required to Take the Course】

To successfully complete this course, students are required to have an advanced level of proficiency in English and Japanese. Non-native speakers of English who wish to take this course need to have a minimum score of TOEFL (iBT) 80, IELTS 6.0, or Eiken Pre-1. Non-native speakers of Japanese need a score of at least J6 or above on their Rikkyo University Japanese Placement Test.
