The primary objectives of this course are to enable students to:
1) Understand scientific research as an intellectual endeavor and reflect on English education from a research perspective;
2) Understand the keywords in each chapter and express opinions in one’s own words using the keywords;
3) Understand and reflect on the interface between second language acquisition research and English language teaching;
4) Understand and reflect on the connection between theory and practice in English language skills and abilities;
5) Understand and reflect on the relationship between the history of English education in Japan and the current internationalization of English;
6) Understand individual differences among learners and reflect on how they can be applied to English language teaching or learning; and
7) Understand the basic principles of language assessment and reflect on how learning outcomes can be measured and assessed appropriately
This course introduces English language education as an academic discipline. By integrating and re-examining insights from related fields such as linguistics and psychology, students will systematically explore the question of how English can be taught effectively. The course provides an overview of major areas, including second language acquisition theory, language teaching methodologies, materials development, language assessment, individual differences among learners, and English as an international language. Theoretical and practical issues related to English skills and proficiency will also be addressed. Through pair work and group work, students are encouraged to think independently, engage in discussion, and develop a deeper understanding of the course content.

この授業に関する前提知識は特に必要ありません。毎回の授業の予習・復習に加えて各自で自主的に文献を読むなどの発展的な学習を求めます。英語教員を目指している方、英語教育学や第二言語習得研究に関心がある方、大学院でこれらの研究をしたい方、日本の英語教育事情に関心がある方、英語を含む外国語学習自体に関心がある方などを想定しています。授業ではペアワークやグループワークなどを頻繁に行います。
授業中に行うミニテストや授業で紹介するオンライン教材にアクセスするためのPCやスマートフォンを持参してください（PC持参が望ましい）。

この授業では、英語教育学という一科学分野を扱います。隣接する諸科学（言語学や心理学など）の知見を統合・再構築することで、「いかにして英語を教えるか」ということを体系的に学ぶ内容となっています。具体的には、第二言語習得論・教授法・教材論・評価論・学習者の個人差・国際語としての英語論などを概観します。英語の所謂四技能五領域周辺についてもその理論と実践について扱う予定です。ペアワークやグループワークを通して学生が主体的に考え、議論し、理解することを中心に据えます。
This course introduces English language education as an academic discipline. By integrating and re-examining insights from related fields such as linguistics and psychology, students will systematically explore the question of how English can be taught effectively.
