The course introduces key debates and historical perspectives within cultural anthropology, aiming to help students:
Understand what matters and why it matters in the field of anthropology.
Develop a way of thinking that moves beyond fixed categories like "human rights" or "poverty" to explore the interconnected networks of complex elements within social systems.
Cultural anthropology is a discipline that examines humanity from a cultural perspective. Cultural anthropologists conduct research in areas referred to as the "field," where they study people's customs and knowledge, documenting their findings in ethnographies. Ethnographies, which represent an accumulation of anthropological knowledge, offer perspectives that challenge conventional "common sense" ways of thinking and viewing the world.
In this class, you will learn the ways of thinking introduced by anthropology and the challenges it faces throughout the history of anthropological thought. Through this class, facing the challenges posed by interacting with others who have different customs and beliefs within complex social systems will encourage you to reflect on the possibilities that such differences can bring.

文化人類学は文化の側面から人類について考える学問である。文化人類学者はフィールドと呼ばれる調査地で調査を行い、人々の習慣や知識を学び、それを民族誌に記してきた。人類学的知識の蓄積と示された民族誌は、既存の「当たり前」とされている考え方やものの見方とは異なる視点を提供する。
本授業では、人類学的思想の歴史を通して、人類学が提示する思考法と人類学が抱える問題について学ぶ。本授業を通して、複雑な社会システムの中で異なる考えや習慣を持つ他者を向き合い、さまざまに異なることがもたらす可能性について考えるきっかけにしてもらいたい。
