Students should finish this course with an understanding of the scope of sociolinguistics and its relationship to other linguistic subdisciplines and other academic fields.
This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics, the study of the relationship between language and society. We will look at variation at all levels of language and how such variation constructs and is constructed by identity and culture. The overall goal of this course is to provide you with the theoretical and methodological knowledge to pursue research in sociolinguistics.
