The objectives of this course are: (1) to develop a fundamental understanding of concepts related to nation, nationalism, race, and ethnicity, and (2) to critically analyze and apply this knowledge within the context of Japanese society.
Prevailing beliefs, such as “Japan is a homogeneous country” or “Racism is an issue elsewhere,” continue to shape perspectives within Japanese society. This course critically examines these assumptions by exploring concepts and examples related to nation, nationalism, race, and ethnicity. While these concepts might be unfamiliar to some, understanding them is crucial for analyzing Japanese society. The course investigates their definitions, similarities and differences, historical perspectives, and various approaches. Additionally, it examines how these concepts manifest in contemporary society, particularly within Japanese society. The course encompasses lectures, discussions, comment sheets, and student presentations, encouraging active participation.

この授業の目標は、（1）ネーション・ナショナリズム、人種、エスニシティの基本的な知識を習得すること、（2）そうした知識を日本社会の文脈に当てはめて批判的に検討することである。
The objectives of this course are: (1) to develop a fundamental understanding of concepts related to nation, nationalism, race, and ethnicity, and (2) to critically analyze and apply this knowledge within the context of Japanese society.
「日本」や「日本人」という言葉は当たり前すぎて、疑ったことがある人はあまりいないかもしれない。また、「日本は単一民族の国だ」、「レイシズムはどこか他の国の問題だ」という意見も、未だ見受けられる。本授業では、こうした前提や言説を、ナショナリズム、人種、エスニシティといった概念やその事例を学ぶことで、批判的に問い直す。これらの概念は、聞いたことがなかったり、あまり馴染みがなかったりするかもしれないが、日本社会を理解し、自分自身や他者を理解するうえで、重要な概念である。本授業では、それらの定義と異同、歴史、さまざまなアプローチを解説するとともに、具体的な事例を通して、それらがどのように現代社会、とりわけ日本社会において発露しているのかを考える。授業は、講義とディスカッション、コメントシートの記入、学生によるグループ発表などで構成され、積極的な参加が求められる。
