The students taking this lecture will become able to understand
(1) historical, cultural and political aspects of nationalism
(2) the process of how nations were imagined and created through the movements of independence and/or modernization, by looking into the cases of Southeast Asian countries such as Dutch East India, Siam (Thailand) and British Burma.
(3) the basic knowledge about the politics of ethnicity in Burma (Myanmar), especially about its background and influence on the process of nation building.
The course will deal with the following topics:
(1) History and nationalism
(2) Important features of nation and nationalism (based on B. Anderson's discussions)
(3) The critical difference between pre-modern states and colonial states in Southeast Asia
(4) How Dutch East India became Indonesia
(5) How Siam (Thailand) created the Thai nation in its process of modernization
(6) Burma under the British colonial rule; census, development of colonial knowledge and anti-British nationalism
(7) The process of making independent Burma and the formation of politics of ethnicity
(8) The Rohingya question and ethnicity

毎回配付される講義資料に目を通し、誠実に話を聞き、必要に応じてノートをとり、講義内容に関する「問い」を自分で意識し、さらなる読書を通じてその「問い」を追究する姿勢を持つ学生の履修が望ましい。すなわち、「さて、今日は何を教えてくれるのですかね」というような受け身の受講姿勢は、この講義に適合しないということである。

（１）国民(nation）を作りあげ、それを維持強化するナショナリズム(nationalism)の特徴を、歴史的・文化的・政治的側面から理解できるようになる
（２）独立運動における国民形成過程の思想的側面と政治行動上の側面に関し、東南アジアのオランダ領東インド（インドネシア）、シャム（タイ）、英領ビルマに注目することによって、その特徴を具体的に理解できるようになる
（３）ビルマ（ミャンマー）が抱える民族政治(politics of ethnicity)の出現背景と、それが国民統合に与える影響について考える基礎的素養が身につくようになる
The students taking this lecture will become able to understand

（７）独立ビルマ（ミャンマー）の創られ方と民族政治（politics of ethnicity)の成立・展開
（８）ロヒンギャ問題に見るethnicity
The course will deal with the following topics:
(1) History and nationalism
(2) Important features of nation and nationalism (based on B. Anderson's discussions)
