【Course Objectives】

In this course, we will deepen our understanding of pragmatics, an academic area that aims to explore the nature of utterance meaning conveyed in specific communicative contexts. We will examine various cases where speaker-listener relationships determine contextual meaning.

【Course Contents】

The goal of pragmatics is to examine what a speaker means by his/her utterance, how a listener interprets what is meant within a particular context, and how the context influences what is said (or unsaid). In an effort to understand the nature of the speaker's intended meaning and the listener's inference of it, we will learn several key concepts in pragmatics; these concepts will provide us with a base to explore the cognitive aspects of human linguistic communication. Specifically, the focal concepts will include deixis, inference, presupposition, cooperation, and implicature. We will also learn about speech acts and, further, will consider the ways in which linguistic politeness is socio-culturally implemented and constrained.
