【Course Objectives】

The purpose of this course is to provide the students with an overview of the linguistic, psychological and educational aspects of bilingualism. Upon completion of this course each student will be able to 1) explain the key concepts of bilingualism, 2) read and understand relevant research studies in the field, and 3) write a research paper on a focused topic citing academic references.

【Course Contents】

We will cover four major areas of research on the individual aspects of bilingualism--language development and loss, language choice and code-switching, cognitive features of bilingual individuals, and education of children through multiple languages. The students are expected to work on reading assignments, participate in class discussions, submit reflection papers after each class, write reports based on library research and/or surveys on a number of issues related to the content of the lecture (every other week), and write an academic paper as a final assignment.
