An introductory course to persuasion research/rhetorical studies. The goal of this course is to teach students basic theories and approaches necessary for studying persuasion and to help them better understand persuasion in everyday life. It also aims to equip them with tools to analyze persuasion critically and practice it responsibly.
In this course, we will view persuasion as a communicative act that influences our perception, thoughts and behavior, and study it from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. In the first half of the course, students will learn major social scientific approaches to study persuasion. In the second half, we will focus on a critical approach to investigate the relationships between persuasion and such social constructs as race, gender, sexuality and class.

説得コミュニケーション研究の入門コース。説得コミュニケーションに関する基本的な理論や研究アプローチを学ぶことで、日常的に行なわれている説得コミュニケーションに対する理解を深め、より批判的かつ自覚的に向きあえるようになることを目的とする。
An introductory course to persuasion research/rhetorical studies. The goal of this course is to teach students basic theories and approaches necessary for studying persuasion and to help them better understand persuasion in everyday life. 本授業では、私たちの認識・思考・行動に影響を与えるコミュニケーション全般を説得と捉え、説得を巡る諸問題を理論と事例研究の双方から考察していく。まず、コミュニケーションとしての説得の特徴や主な研究アプローチを紹介した後、実証主義的アプローチの観点から説得の３手法であるエトス・パトス・ロゴスおよび物語説得について学んでいく。授業の後半では批判的アプローチに焦点を当て、人種、ジェンダー、セクシュアリティといった社会的要因が私たちのコミュニケーションのあり方にどのような影響を与えているのか、コミュニケーションを通してどのように構築されているかを批判的に検討していく。
