Through this course, students will learn keywords and concepts of visual culture and the image, its power, and different ways to understand the visible and its relation with people, power, or politics.
In particular, the role played by the viewer in the meaning-generation process of any given visual medium will be the focus of the course.
We will read excerpts from the second chapter of Practices of Looking, 3rd ed. by Sturken and Cartwright, to familiarize ourselves with basic keywords and concepts of visual culture studies. Through analyses of a rich array of visual artifacts such as artworks, photographs, prints, posters, or videos, we will also familiarize ourselves with specific ways to see images.

美術を含む現代の多彩な視覚表現、視覚メディア、すなわちイメージの意味の生成について、見る側や視覚コミュニケーションの受け手の側がどう関与するのか、について様々な作例や考え方を学び、理解する。
Through this course, students will learn keywords and concepts of visual culture and the image, its power, and different ways to understand the visible and its relation with people, power, or politics.

視覚文化の根幹となるイメージとは何かを、Sturken ＆ Cartwright著Practices of Looking 第3版（2014）の第２章を講読を通じて、イメージに関する基礎的なキーワードについて学び、古今の美術・アート作品、写真、版画、ポスター、動画等の豊富なイメージを具体例として、イメージの特性や見ることの意味について学ぶ。

講読図書は、抜粋をコピー教材として配布予定である。各自予習を必ずしておくこと。英語学習を目的とした授業ではない。視覚文化とはどのようなものであり、どのような考え方をするものなのかを学ぶことが目的である。そのため、キーワード、本文中に引用されたイメージ、著書や著者、美術作品やアーティスト、事件や人物など幅広く調べて理解することが重要である。
