This course takes up relevant examples to grant students the opportunity to inculcate an in-depth understanding of the interchange and clash of different cultures and to appreciate the phenomenon of cultural fusion. Additionally, students will learn the various conceptual aspects of cultural transformation and will be encouraged to formulate their own ideas on the subject.
In today's increasingly globalized world, Japan is experiencing growing points of contact between different cultures. However, this phenomenon is not unique to the present; it was also observed in Japan up until the modern era. This course examines the process of modernizing Japanese theater and performing arts through cross-cultural contact, conflict, fusion, and the creation of new cultures derived from these interactions. By analyzing these processes, students will be guided to independently explore the origins of globalization within contemporary Japanese culture.

さまざまな文化の交流や衝突，あるいは融合といった現象を具体例に則して学び，説明することができる。文化の変容のあり方を多角的に理解し，自ら意見を述べることができる。

グローバル化が進む現代、日本でも異なる文化同士の接点が増加している。しかしそれは現代のみではなく、近代までの日本でもみられた現象である。本授業では、日本の演劇・芸能の近代化を目指して異文化接触、衝突、融合、そしてこれらから導き出された新たな文化の創出の過程を学ぶ。それらを検証していくことによって、現代日本文化のグローバル化の原点を各自が考察できるよう講じていく。
