To learn about the current situations and issues of global commodities (such as raw materials and agricultural, forestry, and fishery products traded on international markets) and to discuss them from the perspectives of development studies, theoretical frameworks, material studies, and area studies.
To study practical examples aimed at promoting fair trade in global commodities and to gain an understanding of their characteristics.
By learning about the realities of trading in familiar global commodities, to develop a perspective that connects domestic and international issues, avoiding viewing international cooperation challenges solely as problems of others abroad, and to cultivate a proactive attitude toward finding solutions.
This lecture focuses on "bananas," a global commodity that we have come to consume as a matter of course.
In Part I, we will start by learning about the supply chain (and value chain) of bananas, including how they are cultivated, harvested, and exported to Japan. Particular attention will be paid to the conditions in production areas in the Philippines, shedding light on recurring issues such as low-wage labor, suppression of labor unions, and pesticide-related harm. Additionally, perspectives from material studies and area studies will be introduced to understand these issues.
In Part II, we will study efforts to solve the challenges related to global commodities such as bananas. These efforts range from those that take the position that poverty in producing countries cannot be resolved through market-driven international trade and thus seek alternative models, to those that accept market mechanisms while exploring better trading practices, and those that utilize corporate expertise to solve problems. International frameworks to encourage corporate self-regulation have also developed. We will learn about practical examples of each of these efforts.
In Part III, we will position the characteristics of the examples studied in Part II within the lineage of development studies for deeper understanding and reflection. Discussions will focus on ideas for developing fair business practices and how students can participate in these efforts. By understanding how consumers themselves are involved in the issues of familiar global commodities, we will consider how to take action toward their resolution.

①グローバル・コモディティ（国際市場で取引される原材料や農林水産物などの商品）の現状と課題を学び、それらを開発学の系譜や理論、モノ研究や地域研究の視点から議論できるようになる。
②グローバル・コモディティの公正な取引を目指す実践例を学び、その特徴を理解できるようになる。
③身近なグローバル・コモディの取引の実態を知ることにより、国際協力の課題を海外の他者の問題とするのではなく、国内と海外を結び付けて考える立場にたち、解決に取り組もうとする姿勢を身に着けることができる。

本講義では、グローバル・コモディティのなかでも私たちが当たり前のように食べるようになった「バナナ」に注目します。
第I部では、バナナがどのように栽培・収穫され、日本に輸出されているかというサプライチェーン（及びヴァリューチェーン）を知るところから始めます。なかでもフィリピンの生産地の状況に光を当て、低賃金労働、労働組合弾圧、農薬禍など、繰り返されてきた問題について理解を深めます。くわえて、こうした問題をモノ研究や地域研究から捉える視点を紹介します。
第II部では、バナナのようなグローバル・コモディティに関する課題解決の取り組みを学びます。そうした取り組みには、市場経済主義の国際貿易では生産国の貧困問題は解決不可能という立場に立って代替モデルを模索するものから、市場主義を受容しながらよりよい取引のあり方を模索するもの、企業の専門性を問題の解決策に活かすものなど、様ざまなものがあります。企業に自主規制を促す国際的な枠組みも発展してきています。それぞれの取り組みの実践例を学びます。
第III部では、第II部で学んだ事例の特徴を開発学の系譜に位置づけて理解し、考察します。公正なビジネスを発展させるアイディアや、学生としてどのように参加できるかについてディスカッションを行います。身近なグローバル・コモディティの問題に消費者として自分自身がどのようにかかわっているかを知り、その解決に向けてどう行動したらいいか考えます。
