1) Students will learn about the current conditions and issues surrounding global commodities (raw materials and agricultural, forestry, and fisheries products traded on international markets), and develop the ability to discuss these issues through the lenses of development studies, material/commodity studies, and area studies.
Students will study cases that aim to promote fair and equitable trade of global commodities, and understand their key features and characteristics.
Through an understanding of the supply chains of everyday global commodities, students will develop a awareness of their own positionality in the issues of international cooperation.
In Part I, we take up bananas to identify the key issues surrounding global commodities, while reflecting on how students and Japanese society are connected to these challenges. The course begins by examining the supply chains and value chains through which bananas are cultivated and harvested at production sites in the Philippines and exported to Japan. Particular attention will be paid to health and environmental problems caused by pesticides, low wages, and the suppression of labor unions, among other persistent issues in the industry.
In Part II, the course examines food products other than bananas, tracing the socio-economic history of how these products became global commodities. The course also introduces commodity studies and area studies as methodological approaches for understanding the socio-economic histories of global commodities.
In Part III, the course invites guest lecturers who are practically engaged in addressing the challenges surrounding global commodities through business-based initiatives.

① グローバル・コモディティ（国際市場で取引される原材料や農林水産物などの商品）の現状と課題を学び、それらを開発学の系譜や理論、モノ研究や地域研究の視点から議論できるようになる。
② グローバル・コモディティの公正な取引を目指す実践例を学び、その特徴を理解できるようになる。
③ 身近なグローバル・コモディの取引の実態を知ることにより、国際協力の課題を海外の他者の問題とするのではなく、国内と海外を結び付けて考える立場にたち、解決に取り組もうとする姿勢を身に着けることができる。

本講義では、グローバル・コモディティのなかでも私たちが当たり前のように消費するようになった食べ物に注目します。
第I部では、身近な果物のバナナを取りあげ、グローバル・コモディティの問題に自らや自らの社会がどのようにかかわっているのか、という問題の所在を確認します。フィリピンの生産地において、バナナがどのように栽培・収穫され、日本に輸出されているかというサプライチェーン（およびヴァリューチェーン）を知るところから始めます。なかでも農薬禍、低賃金労働、労働組合弾圧、など長年にわたって繰り返されてきた問題について理解を深めます。
第II部では、バナナ以外の食べ物をとりあげ、それらがどのようにグローバル・コモディティになったのか、という社会経済史を学びます。グローバル・コモディティをモノ研究や地域研究から捉える視点を紹介します。
第III部では、グローバル・コモディティに関する課題解決の取り組みを学びます。そうした取り組みには、市場経済主義の国際貿易では生産国の貧困問題は解決不可能という立場に立って代替モデルを模索するものから、市場主義を受容しながらよりよい取引のあり方を模索するもの、企業の専門性を問題の解決策に活かすものなど、様ざまなものがあります。企業に自主規制を促す国際的な枠組みも発展してきています。公正なビジネスを発展させるアイディアや、学生としてどのように参加できるかについてのディスカッションを通じて、身近なグローバル・コモディティの問題の解決に向けてどう行動したらいいか考えます。
