Wilkins (1972) once proclaimed, "Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed." As indicated by his statement, vocabulary knowledge is a prerequisite for successful communication. Given the importance of vocabulary knowledge for successful communication, this course explores a range of issues related to second language vocabulary acquisition. Topics covered will include intentional / incidental vocabulary learning, guessing words from context, interference, mnemonics, retrieval, and distributed practice.
Through reading assignments, lectures, and group discussions, students will acquire basic principles of second language vocabulary learning. Based on theories and concepts covered in class, students will also create vocabulary learning materials or activities in groups.

全授業回のうち最大7回をオンラインで実施予定（実施回についてはCanvas LMSで指示する）。
"Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed" (Wilkins, 1972)という言葉を持ち出すまでもなく、英語でコミュニケーションをとるためには、十分な語彙力が必要不可欠である。この授業では、実践的なコミュニケーション能力の基盤となる語彙力を育成するためにはどうしたら良いか、第二言語語彙習得を元に検討する。具体的には、語彙の意図的学習・付随的学習、文脈からの語彙推測、干渉、記憶術、想起練習、分散学習などのトピックについて学ぶ。

文献購読や講義を通して、第二言語語彙習得について学ぶ。また、文献・講義で紹介された概念や理論を実際に体験するための活動や、グループディスカッション等を通して、さらに理解を深める。
授業は受講生による発表およびディスカッションを中心に進める。担当者は担当箇所の要点を発表したり、内容理解を確認するための小テストを作成することが求められる。
最終的に、授業で学習した内容をふまえた語彙学習教材・活動を作成し、グループで発表する。
