【Course Objectives】

The aim is to link the individual student’s interests, and issues they are aware of, to an academic topic in order to determine the direction in which to take their graduation research project. We will teach the basic knowledge and perspective required to achieve this aim.

【Course Contents】

We will deal with the various globalization related problems facing modern society, from an urban culture perspective. As the mixing ground for diverse cultures, why do urban areas become so enormous? While developing understanding of the cultural diversity generated by modern cities, we will study the transformation that culture has suffered through the process of modernization, based on accounts of experiences of the West, by intellectuals from the Japanese Meiji Era. In the second half of the lecture series, as well as touching on Japanese urban culture from the seventies until present day, we will also discuss the various problems facing the modern Japanese society undergoing expanding globalization. These subjects will be introduced in the lecture module, ‘Globalization and Social Ideas’ so it is preferred that students attend both modules. It is hoped that students will build on the lecture content by attending this seminar and developing relevant knowledge and ways of thinking.
