It is essential for Advanced Seminar students to take initiative in their own work toward the successful completion of their graduation thesis and prepare to share their research progress during class discussions. The Advanced Seminar 2 course requires students to read and analyze a significant amount of literature and complete their literature review by the end of Week 14.
Students will also be required to prepare for the following assignments:
• An individual presentation during Week 11 or 12
• A research proposal

This course will use the reference materials indicated in this syllabus. The instructor will let you know if additional materials are required. From Weeks 5 to 10, students are responsible for finding and sharing reading materials related to their chosen topic with their classmates. During these sessions, students will be required to present an overview of the reading materials, which includes its thesis statement, strengths and limitations, and implications towards future research on the topic. Students will also discuss how to structure a literature review for their graduation thesis. |
Assigned readings and handouts will be provided in either Japanese or English. Students are expected to be able to understand reading materials in both languages.
Students are required to bring their own devices to use in class (e.g., a tablet or laptop) to access course materials via Canvas and Google Classroom.
The syllabus is subject to change. Changes, if any, will be announced during classes.
In Advanced Seminar 2, students will decide on a topic, complete a literature review, and design a research plan for their graduation thesis. In designing the research plan, students will develop research objectives and questions, select appropriate research methodologies, and create a timetable and plan for writing their thesis.
The theme of this seminar is “Translation and Interpreting in Public Services,” which aims to introduce and explore the profession of court interpreting, along with linguistic needs in other public services. Possible thesis topics could be related to legal and ethical issues of court and medical interpreting, ethical concerns in AI-driven interpreting in community settings, language access in emergency services, interpreter education, or a more general aspect of interpreting in public services. Upon identifying a thesis topic, students will identify knowledge, practical, and/or methodological gaps in existing research on their chosen topic through literature reviews and discussions. This process will help formulate and refine their research questions and design the research plan.
