The objective of this course is to introduce students to the basics of legal research, presentation, and discussion. At the end of the course, students will be able to 1) conduct legal research on issues they find interest, 2) construct a structure of a presentation, 3) give a presentation on the legal topic, and 4) have group discussions on the presented topics.
Students will learn how to conduct legal research through the legal database available at Rikkyo library, from free online resources, and so on. Students will also learn how to construct presentations on legal issues based on their legal research.
Most classes will be based on student presentations or debates on issues taken from news articles and other materials related to legal issues. This course principally concerns legal issues under Japanese law, but the lecturer will introduce foreign laws for comparison. Students are also allowed to add perspectives of other jurisdictions.
