The course aims to help students develop analytical and presentation skills. This course's primary objective is to help students understand complex issues, evaluate current points of interest from a legal perspective and present their research.
The course emphasizes critical thinking and analysis, fostering different perspectives and approaches to a legal issue. In addition to developing analytical skills, the course focuses on enhancing presentation abilities within a legal context. Students will learn to communicate legal arguments effectively, present research findings, and engage with audiences professionally. Students will explore how to identify and evaluate credible legal sources, synthesize information, and incorporate this research into their presentations.
In summary, this course will help students foster:
a. Legal Research: Students will gain expertise in identifying legal sources, synthesizing information, and integrating research into compelling presentations.
b. Analytical Skills: Students will analyze different legal issues, extract essential information, and evaluate topics from a legal perspective.
c. Presentation Skills: Students will learn to communicate legal arguments effectively, organize content for clarity, and practice professional presentations.
In the first half of the course, students will learn the fundamentals of legal research and how to organize legal presentations. They will study the structure of law, including the common law system, international law, and Japanese law, and develop skills in locating and analyzing legal materials. Students will also learn to organize and deliver presentations suited to their audience.
Once the introductory phase is complete, the students will deliver group presentations. The group size will depend on the number of students in the class. Each group may present a different perspective on an assigned topic, provide their own analysis of a chosen subject, or choose a topic within a broader guideline. Additionally, group members will take turns acting as discussants, asking their peers questions during the presentations. The presentation phase includes a preparation class with instructor support, followed by a class dedicated to presentations and discussions.
During the presentation phase, students may engage with three distinct presentation styles. First, students might answer a problem question. In this style, they may assume the roles of opposing lawyers, prosecutors/crown attorneys, judges, or legal advisors to analyze and respond to a specific situation as legal practitioners. Second, students may also have the opportunity to address a research question posed by the instructor. Finally, students may have the opportunity to choose a topic of their interest for presentation.
