【Course Objectives】

1)To understand the basic concept of legal structure regarding the financial systems and their differences among jurisdictions and 2) to discuss new developments in the systems.

【Course Contents】

1) Share their understanding of the characteristics and differences of rules concerning participating students' jurisdictions.
2) Discuss new financial issues of interest to the participating students.
Students are requested to briefly summarize the situation in your country concerning the discussion of the next topic.

1 Introduction: Overview of financial markets and legal entities; why are financial markets necessary?
2 Position of banks in the financial system; why are banks regulated?
3 What is a payment system: Why are crypto assets attracting attention?
4 Role of securities firms; why is crowdfunding attracting attention?
5 What do central banks do? Why do they exist separately from governments?
6 What do regulators do; why do they take different forms in different countries?
7 Legal system (laws, regulations, guidelines); why the tiered structure?
8 Banking regulation; why are banks regulated?
9 Securities regulations; why is disclosure necessary?
10 Other regulations: Why are anti-money laundering measures necessary?
11 What was the Lehman Shock? Why do crises repeat themselves?
12 Basel regulations. Why are international regulations necessary?
13 New issues; culture and climate change. Why do financial institutions expect it?
14 Summary: What role should financial institutions play?
