グローバルコースの学生優先 |
Our main objective is to improve your abilities (i) to advocate for positions (e.g., your client's side in litigation or your in-house legal department's stance on a business strategy) logically and confidently, (ii) to conduct legal research, and (iii) to express yourself in a sophisticated manner and with your legal research as support/foundation.
A secondary objective is to become more fully aware of cross-border legal, business, and social trends influencing communication today.
Our seminar will focus on advocacy via advanced legal research and legal writing.
We will begin with solidification of our legal syllogism/logic skills before tackling practical legal research exercises. Then, we will assess and mimic a range of advocacy examples from the realms of litigation (e.g., tort lawsuit briefs), corporate law (e.g., company responses to anticompetitive behavior allegations), and criminal law (e.g., defenses of defendants).
Throughout our seminar and with the tailored guidance of your instructor, you will work on your own legal research and writing project. The topic and/or field of law can be what most interests or motivates you. Once completed, you will have an opportunity to share a summary of your project with your classmates and participate in an enjoyable Q&A session.

The instructor will provide reading materials based on the progress and/or theme of each class. Students are asked to (i) read and think about the materials and (ii) prepare for class/group discussion before each session.
In addition, again depending on course progress and themes, writing assignments will be given as homework to be submitted online.
Each student will also complete a legal research and writing project -- for example, creation of a brief advocating for a client -- on which a short presentation with interactive Q&A with classmates and the instructor will take place in the course's latter stages.
