Our main objectives are (i) to develop robust legal research skills by identifying and evaluating credible sources such as court decisions, academic papers, and real-world law firm bulletins and learning to extract and synthesize the critical legal arguments they contain and (ii) to build confident and persuasive presentation abilities by organizing findings clearly and communicating them professionally to various audiences.
Supplementary objectives include (i) sharpening our analytical thinking by examining a range of legal issues that arise in business and legal practice and (ii) honing skills to engage constructively with the perspectives and arguments of others through Q&A and discussion.
This course is designed to help students develop the research and communication skills essential to legal practice, law-related business roles, and academic work. Early in the semester, students will be introduced to legal research methods through two dedicated library guidance sessions focused on locating and evaluating credible legal sources such as court decisions and academic papers. Students will also learn how to read and incorporate real-world law firm bulletins/publications of the kind that corporations and in-house counsel regularly rely upon.
In parallel with and (primarily) following this foundational phase, students will work in groups to research, prepare, and deliver presentations on assigned legal topics. Each group will present their findings and then participate in a Q&A and discussion session with their peers.
In the latter half of the course, students will deliver individual presentations, each followed by Q&A and discussion. Throughout the semester, students are expected to engage actively — not only as presenters, but also as thoughtful and prepared audience members and discussants.
