2. Students will gain insight into the relationship between past political thoughts and today's political society.
3. Students will acquire the ability to think critically about political issues.
Political thought is not only a field of political science, but it is also the foundation that supports each of these fields and lies at the heart of political science. The thoughts of the past may be the roots in today's political society, or they may pose timeless and universal questions. Those who are blind to the past are also blind to the present and the future. In this course, we will review representative European political thoughts (reading original texts and related thoughts) and discuss the issues such as what politics should be for, what justice should be like, what the issues facing today's politics are, and how they should be overcome, and so on.

政治思想は、たんに政治学の一分野であるだけでなく、その各分野を支える基盤でもあり、政治学の中枢に位置する。過去の諸思想は、今日の政治社会のルーツになっていることもあれば、時代を超えた普遍的な問いを投げかけていることもある。過去に盲目な者は、現在と未来にも盲目になる。本講義では、ヨーロッパの代表的な政治思想を概観しつつ (原典を読み解きつつ、また関連思想も取り上げつつ)、政治は何のためにあるべきか、正義はどのようなものであるべきか、今日の政治が抱える課題はどのようなものであり、またどのように克服すべきか、等々の問題をめぐり考察を行なう。
