To get a general picture of contemporary Japanese diplomacy from a historical perspective
The lecturer is a journalist with 30 years' experience of covering Japanese politics and diplomacy. The course deals with such themes as the end of the Cold War, 9/11 and the war in Iraq, and the rise of China, on which the lecturer had hands-on experience.

現代の日本外交のかかえる課題について包括的な知識を得る。あわせて主な二国間関係について歴史的な歩みを学ぶ。
To get a general picture of contemporary Japanese diplomacy from a historical perspective
ジャーナリストとして３０年以上にわたって日本の政治と外交を取材してきました。冷戦の終結、同時多発テロとイラク戦争、中国の台頭…激動する内外情勢を第一線から報道する中で、たえず頭にあったのは、日本はどのような国であるべきか、日本は世界でどういう役割を担うべきかという問いでした。そうした問題意識を、歴史の文脈でとらえ直して、日本外交を論じたいと思います。
