In the 21st century, democracies are confronting a range of new challenges, including pandemics, new technology, economic inequality, the instability of liberal democracy, the ‘fragmentation’ of society, prolonged war, and climate change.
This seminar aims to introduce students to fundamental concepts and debates in politics through the study of literature addressing these issues.
By actively participating in the course, students will have the opportunity to develop their academic skills, including presentation, debate, and report writing.
In this seminar, students will engage in a rotational reading and discussion of the assigned texts. Presenters will provide a comprehensive summary of the readings, while the rest of the class is required to submit a comment paper prior to each session.
During the seminar, discussions will focus on the key issues and questions raised by the presenters and comment papers. If deemed necessary, students may be divided into smaller groups to facilitate more in-depth discussion and analysis.
In class, group work will be organized based on individual interests, and a group report will be presented on the final day.

パンデミック、グローバル格差、リベラル・デモクラシーの動揺、社会の「分断」、戦争、気候変動など、私たちは現在進行形の様々な課題に直面している。
本演習は、これらの問題を素描する文献を読み解き、政治を分析する基本的な概念や議論について学ぶ。
また、授業への参加を通じて、テキスト要約の報告、論点の提出および討論、レポート執筆に関する学術的な基礎能力を身につけることも目標とする。

本演習では、現代の政治と民主主義を分析する入門的な文献を輪読しながら、各テーマについて討論する。報告担当者はテキストの内容報告を行い、それ以外の受講生は事前にコメント・ペーパー（400字程度）を提出する。
各回、コメント・ペーパーや報告者論点などからいくつかの問題提起をふまえた全体討論を行う。 必要に応じて、より詳細な議論と分析を促すため、小グループに分かれて討論することもある。
授業後半では、個々の関心に応じてグループワークを行い、最終日にグループ報告を行う予定である。
