How do politics and space relate to each other? What does space mean for politics? In this seminar, we will discuss some of the key concepts of modern political theory in terms of 'space'. The term 'space' here is, not a metaphor, but a physical one. Houses, rooms, open spaces, edifices, squares, streets, shopping malls, amusement parks, and parliament buildings... these are the spaces we stay in and pass through in our daily lives. In some cases, such as parliament buildings, there are clear connections with politics. In contrast, in others, such as private houses and shopping malls, many spaces are not usually associated with politics. However, taking a closer look, it will be revealed that all sorts of spaces including those seemingly non-political contain latent issues of power and ideology, capitalism and socialism, public-private relations, and social welfare, which are the subject of political science. This seminar aims to develop students' perspective that sees the political in all spaces around us.
This course covers a wide variety of topics related to space and politics. In each class, students will read and discuss the selected literature on these topics.
The second and third classes, ‘Public and Private Space’, discuss the implications and problems of the traditional view that politics is proper in the public realm, not in the private one such as homes.
The fourth and fifth classes, ‘Housing and Capitalism/Socialism’, consider how the way people live is affected by differences in political and economic regimes. For example, communal apartments tend to be preferred in socialist regimes, while private home ownership is preferred in affluent capitalist regimes.
In the sixth and seventh classes, ‘Frontiers and Democracy/Imperialism’, we consider the role of the frontier, that is the unexplored outside, for modern democratic regimes and capitalist economies.
In the eighth and ninth classes, ‘Huge Architectures and Utopia/Ideology’, we discuss how the skyscrapers and edifices that appeared from the end of the 19th century onwards were built not only for technical matters but also for political dreams.
The tenth and eleventh classes, ‘Squares and Protest Movements, Parliaments and Representation', consider the meaning of protest through the temporary occupation of urban space, which has become significant in social movements since 2011. It will also discuss some cases where the parliament building itself is occupied by the protesting people.
In the twelfth and thirteenth classes, ‘Comfortable Spaces and Consumer /Surveillance Society’, we will discuss the issues of surveillance and gentrification in clean, safe, convenient, and comfortable spaces such as shopping malls, amusement parks, and airports.

①題目：レポートこの演習で扱うテーマのどこに関心があるかを自由に書いてください。
参考文献をつけるかどうかは任意ですが、応募過多の場合、参考文献が適切に明記されているレポート、質の高い参考文献が用いられているレポートを優先的に評価します。
②字数：800字以上、1200字以内。
政治と空間はどのように関係しているか。政治にとって空間がもつ意味とは何か。本演習では「空間」を切り口に、近現代の政治理論の重要概念について議論します。ここで問題にする「空間」とは、メタファーではなく、文字通りの物理的空間のことです。住居や部屋、空き地、巨大建造物、広場、道路、ショッピングモール、娯楽施設、議事堂…これらは私たちが日常的に滞在し、通り過ぎていく空間です。議事堂のように、政治との関わりが明らかな場合もあれば、個人の住宅やショッピングモールのように、通常は政治と関連づけられにくい空間もあります。しかし、詳しくみていけば、一見して非政治的とされるものも含めて、あらゆる空間には政治学の対象となるような、権力やイデオロギー、資本主義と社会主義、公私関係や福祉の問題が潜んでいます。本演習の目標は、私たちの身のまわりにありふれた空間に、政治性を見出す視座を養うことにあります。
How do politics and space relate to each other? What does space mean for politics? In this seminar, we will discuss some of the key concepts of modern political theory in terms of 'space'. 本演習では空間と政治に関係する多彩なトピックを取り上げます。毎回、テーマに合わせた文献を講読し、議論を行います。
第2・3回目「公的空間と私的空間」では、政治は家庭などのプライベートな空間ではなく、公共空間において行われるものだという伝統的主張の意味と問題点を議論します。
第4・5回目「住宅と資本主義／社会主義」では、人びとの住み方が政治経済体制の違いによってどのように左右されるのかを考えます。例えば社会主義体制下では共同住宅が好まれがちであるのに対して、資本主義社会では個人の持家が好まれるといった違いです。
第6・7回目「フロンティアと民主主義／帝国主義」では、近代的な民主主義体制と資本主義経済にとって、フロンティア＝未開拓の外部がどのような役割を果たすかを考えます。
第8・9回目「巨大建築とユートピア／イデオロギー」では、19世紀末以降に登場した高層ビルや巨大建築には、単に技術的な可能性だけでなく、政治的な夢が込められていた点について議論します。
第10・11回目「広場と抗議運動、議場と代表制」では、2011年以降の社会運動に顕著にみられるようになった、都市空間の一時的占拠による抗議について検討します。また、議会が民衆に占拠される事例についても議論します。
第12・13回目「快適な空間と消費社会／監視社会」では、ショッピングモールやテーマパーク、空港などの清潔、安全、便利、快適な空間における、監視やジェントリフィケーションの問題を考えます。
This course covers a wide variety of topics related to space and politics. In each class, students will read and discuss the selected literature on these topics.
The second and third classes, ‘Public and Private Space’, discuss the implications and problems of the traditional view that politics is proper in the public realm, not in the private one such as homes.
