【Course Objectives】

This course is designed for students interested in studying law-related topics in English, particularly those who are interested in law and peace-related topics. Moreover, this course might be a good option for those who are considering future participation in exchange programs or are interested in the Global Program from the Faculty of Law. Students will be introduced to studying in English in a way that is manageable and not overwhelming. While the primary language of instruction is English, Japanese may also be used in class.

The main objectives of this course are twofold: first, to provide students with an introductory experience of studying a topic in English within a safe and welcoming environment, and second, to introduce students to the relationship between law and peace.

Students with an interest in law and social sciences are especially encouraged to enroll. Regardless of their level of confidence in the English language, this course is designed to support all students.

The course will primarily focus on the international aspects of law and peace, but there will also be discussions on how peace impacts society and individuals.
The objectives of this course are to help students:
a) have an introduction to law and law-related topics in English
b) gain a basic understanding of international law and peace from an interdisciplinary perspective
c) develop skills to critically analyze key social and legal issues

【Course Contents】

This course is designed to provide students with a better understanding of peace-related concepts such as positive, negative, and cultural peace. Students will also analyze how these concepts relate to law and engage with theories on nonviolence. Additionally, the course will focus on whether and how states can go to war, as well as how the law applies once war breaks out. Finally, the course will address how to hold war criminals accountable for their crimes. It is important to note that the opposite of peace is violence, and this course will deal with large-scale violence and violent behavior as breaches of peace and law.

Please note that sensitive topics such as war and violence will be discussed.

This course is an introductory seminar for anyone interested in studying law in English or those interested in going on exchange to an English-speaking university. Classes will be in English, but the instructor will accommodate those who are not confident in the language (discussions and questions can be in Japanese). No previous knowledge of international law – or law in general – is necessary. Everyone is welcome to join and participate, regardless of their language, background, or legal knowledge.
