【Course Objectives】

This course aims to provide students with an introduction to some fundamental aspects of British criminal law, both international and Japanese regulations concerning human trafficking (modern-day slavery), and the basic principles of international criminal law, with a particular emphasis on the International Criminal Court.

The objectives of this course are to help students:
1) have a basic understanding of English criminal law.
2) have a basic understanding of international criminal law.
2) develop skills to critically analyze key social and legal issues concerning criminal law.
3) think about criminal law issues from a global perspective.

This course is suitable for students with no prior knowledge of criminal law, and it is open to students of all backgrounds and majors who are interested in taking this seminar. Everyone is welcome.

【Course Contents】

The course will start by introducing students to the fundamental definitions and comprehension of a common law criminal system. Although the primary focus will be on the United Kingdom, the students will also discuss the criminal system of the United States.

After a brief overview of a domestic law approach to criminal law, the students will analyze international aspects. The international element is divided into two parts: (1) human trafficking and (2) international criminal law. While studying human trafficking, the students will also have the opportunity to analyze how Japan is responding to a global regulation on the trafficking of persons.
