【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to understand various aspects of the Japanese judicial system, particularly the Supreme Court of Japan, as seen by Japanese and international scholars.

【Course Contents】

The first part of this course will examine the judicial system, the legal professions, and the Supreme Court of Japan in historical and comparative perspective. The second part will examine several leading cases of the SCJ.

Lessons require active participation by the students. Participants will be required to give individual or group presentations on selected topics. Short in-class tests will be held at regular intervals.

【授業時間外(予習・復習等)の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

Participants will be required to read regularly the assigned materials in English in preparation for the lessons.
Participants will have to prepare individual or group presentations.
In the final lessons, the entire text of a Supreme Court of Japan judgment will be read and analysed.

【履修にあたって求められる能力 / Abilities Required to Take the Course】

Ability to listen to a class in English and engage in simple conversations in English.
Ability to answer simple questions, make comments and engage in discussions.
Basic knowledge of Japanese history and society since 1947.
A suitable English language proficiency level is a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

A pencil or pen, a notebook for taking notes.
For the last lessons, participants will need to have a printed copy of a Supreme Court ruling.
