3. Students wull acquire the ability to consider critically the issues concerning the contemporary democracy, based on the above-mentioned points.
In this seminar, we will discuss the issues concerning the contemporary democracy through a close reading of Plato's “Republic”.
It is said that the history of Western philosophy is but “a series of footnotes to Plato" (A. N. Whitehead). The “Republic,” in particular, has been read for more than 2,000 years as Plato's masterpiece among his major works and as a classic among the classics of Western philosophy. The reason is that the Dialogue deals with the fundamental themes of the nature of politics, which should be questioned throughout the ages.
The “Republic” is known as the advocating of the best state under the rule of the philosopher-king who grasps the eternal and immutable Idea of the Good, but in its background, we can see Plato's strong sense of crisis against the corrupt democracy of that time. Also in recent years, the crisis of democracy has been pointed out. In fact, anti-democratic far-right groups and populism have emerged in many parts of the world. In Japan, too, democracy has been dysfunctional for a long time, as evidenced by the declining voter turnout and the disorganization of parliamentary deliberations. Plato's argument offers a great deal of insight into the nature of politics today. In the fall semester, we will closely read Books 6 through 10 of the “Republic”.

本演習では、プラトンの『国家』を精読しながら、現代デモクラシーをめぐる諸問題について議論を行なう。
西洋哲学の歴史は「プラトンへの注釈」にすぎない（Ａ・Ｎ・ホワイトヘッド）、とまで言われる。とりわけ『国家』は、プラトンの主著の中の主著として、そればかりか西洋哲学の古典の中の古典として、二千年以上の長きにわたり読み継がれてきた。その理由は、この対話篇が政治のあり方をめぐって、時代を超えて問われるべき根本的テーマを扱っているからである。
『国家』は、永遠不変の善のイデアを把握する哲人王支配による最善国家を説くものとして知られるが、その背景には、当時の堕落したデモクラシーに対するプラトンの強い危機意識が見て取れる。近年もまた、デモクラシーの危機が指摘されている。実際に、反デモクラシー的な極右勢力やポピュリズムが、世界各地で台頭している。日本においても、投票率の低下や国会審議の形骸化など、デモクラシーの機能不全が長く続いている。プラトンの議論は、現代の政治のあり方を考えるうえで、大きな示唆を与えてくれる。秋学期は、『国家』第六巻から第十巻を精読する。
In this seminar, we will discuss the issues concerning the contemporary democracy through a close reading of Plato's “Republic”.
