When we think about the political system of early modern Japan (roughly from the end of the 16th century to the middle of the 19th century), we tend to imagine the autocratic rule of the samurai, the class system, and ‘national isolation’ (a term that is controversial), but there are many common misconceptions about how political power was justified, the relationship between the class system and the reality of social life, and the nature of Japan's connections with the outside world. In this seminar, we will read research papers and historical documents that challenge common misconceptions, and through discussion among participants, aim to gain a new perspective on Japanese history.
While reading historical documents and recent research papers on early modern political systems and political thought together with the participants, we will reconsider the common misunderstandings that we are currently trapped in, and consider a perspective from which to analyze the history of Japanese politics. We will first read part of an introductory research book, and once we have gained some perspective, we will also try reading documents written in the early modern period. Knowledge of classical Japanese or Chinese is not required. I will provide detailed explanations as we go along so that participants can understand if they can read modern Japanese. I ask participants to be proactive in raising questions and engaging in discussion.

近世日本（だいたい16世紀末から19世紀半ば）の政治体制について、武士による専制、身分制度、「鎖国」（この用語には論争がある）などがイメージされるが、権力がどのように正当化されていたのか、身分制度と社会生活の実態にはどのような関係があったのか、海外とのつながりや影響関係はどのようなものだったのかについて、多くの誤解が通念化している。この演習では、一般的な誤解を覆す研究や史料を講読し、参加者相互に討論しながら、現代的視点から改めて日本の歴史を見直すきっかけをつかむことを目指す。

近世政治体制・政治思想に関する史料や近年の研究論文を講読しながら、現在の私たちがとらわれている通念・誤解を再検討し、日本政治の歴史を冷静に分析する視座を考えていく。まず導入的な研究書の一部を読み、ある程度見通しを得たら、実際に近世に書かれた文書の読解にも挑戦する。古文・漢文などの知識は求めない。現代日本語が読めれば分かるように解説を加えながら進めていく。積極的に疑問を提起し、討論する姿勢を参加者に求める。
