【Course Objectives】

This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the political and social characteristics of South Korea and analyze them from a comparative politics perspective. Through this approach, students will gain a broader understanding of Japanese politics and society.

【Course Contents】

South Korea has experienced rapid economic development while undergoing unique transformations in its political institutions and social structures. This course provides a comprehensive study of South Korea’s political system, social structure, and historical background. By comparing these aspects with Japan, students will develop a deeper understanding of the political and social dynamics of both countries.

The first half of the course focuses on South Korea’s political system. Key topics include the evolution of the constitution, the presidential system and parliamentary institutions, the electoral system, party politics, the judiciary, and the role of the media. Through this analysis, students will explore the developmental trajectory of South Korea’s political system and its dynamism.

The second half of the course delves into contemporary South Korean society. Issues such as declining birth rates and aging populations, poverty, digital transformation, educational inequality, and gender issues will be analyzed. The course will examine how these societal challenges intersect with political and economic factors. Particular emphasis will be placed on the implications of South Korea’s social issues for Japan’s future.

【Course Format】
The course is divided into two parts: the spring semester and the fall semester. It will be structured around the following key texts:

Spring Semester:
Using Comparative Perspectives on South Korean Politics: The Dynamics of Korean Politics by Yuki Asaba, students will examine the historical background of South Korea’s political institutions and policies. Topics include the characteristics of the presidential system, parliamentary functions, the electoral system, and the role of civic movements. The course will explore the theoretical foundations of South Korea’s political dynamics while considering comparisons with Japan.

Fall Semester:
Using Contemporary South Korean Society: Ultra-Low Birth Rate, Poverty and Social Isolation, Digitalization by Ikumi Haruki, students will analyze modern social challenges in South Korea. Discussions will cover the impacts of declining birth rates and aging populations, widening social disparities, societal transformations driven by digital technology, the relationship between education and the labor market, and shifts in gender issues. The course will also consider how these social issues relate to political and economic structures and what insights they offer for Japan’s future.

Students will conduct individual case studies on topics of interest that they identified through the reading assignments. They will present their findings during class.

【Course Features】
This course incorporates various activities to enhance learning:

・Joint Seminar with Other Universities: A joint seminar will be held with students from other universities, allowing participants to engage in discussions from diverse perspectives and deepen their understanding. During the summer trip, an international exchange program is planned with students from Hanyang University's College of International Culture (ERICA Campus).
・Guest Lectures: Experts specializing in South Korean politics and society will be invited to deliver special lectures.
・Viewing and Discussion of Video Materials: Students will watch video materials related to Korean politics and society and engage in discussions based on the content.
