This course aims to shed light on the realities of the "Global South," a term that began to be widely mentioned across the world in the early 2020s. Despite its frequent use, the term lacks a fixed definition. It is sometimes defined as a group of countries challenging the Western-led order, at other times used broadly to mean "developing countries," or even considered synonymous with the G77 group in the United Nations. Even among the countries identified as part of the "Global South," there is no shared understanding of which nations the term encompasses.
In this course, we will first examine the usage of the term "Global South" in academic papers and media reports to confirm its lack of an objective definition. However, it is also a fact that some countries and leaders are actively using the term—and more and more leaders are doing so. By focusing on their statements, we will clarify for what purposes this term is employed and what aspects of contemporary international relations it reflects.
Participants in this course will be required to independently collect, analyze, and report data throughout the year. In the final session, we will discuss how the movements prompted by this term could reshape the international order. Additionally, groups that wish to do so may compile their research findings in the form of a formal paper.

この演習は、2020年代前半から世界中で言及されるようになった「グローバルサウス」の実態を明らかにすることを目標としている。当たり前のように使われているこの語には、定まった定義がない。西欧主導の秩序に挑戦する国々のグループと定義されることもあれば、広く「途上国」という意味で使われたり、国連におけるG77グループと同義とされることもある。「グローバルサウス」の一員として名指しされる国の間でさえ、この語がどのような国々を含むのかについての共通了解はない。
この演習ではまず、学術論文や報道における「グローバルサウス」の用語法に接近することで、この語に客観的な定義が欠如していることを確認する。とはいえ、この語を積極的に使用する国やリーダーがいる（増えている）のも事実である。彼らの発話に焦点を当てることで、この語がどのような目的のために用いられ、また現代国際関係のどのような姿を映しているのかを明らかにする。
履修者は、一年を通じて、自らデータを収集、分析し、報告することが求められる。最終回には、この語が引き起こす運動がどのように国際秩序を変化させるうるのかを議論する。また希望するグループは、研究成果を論文形式でまとめることもできる。
