We will read Montesquieu's Esprit des lois (1748), discussing not only the work itself but also insights it offers for considering our contemporary politics and society. Additionally, through individual research, students will develop their own critical awareness and perspectives while improving their reading comprehension, research, and analytical skills.
In textbook or overview descriptions, Montesquieu is often portrayed solely as an advocate of the separation of powers. In reality, however, his Esprit des lois encompasses remarkably diverse content. The scope of his arguments, spanning observations on different climates and mores, interest in Asia, discourses on population and family, comparisons between the ancient and the modern, and insights into commercial society, is astonishingly wide-ranging. In this seminar, we will read through this philosopher's main work, which exerted immense influence from 18th-century Enlightenment thought to the U.S. Constitution and the French Revolution, and try to be in touch with the depth of his thinking as much as possible.
Besides reading the literature, students also give presentations based on individual research. In addition, students are scheduled to participate in a joint seminar with other universities and compete in an intercollegiate presentation contest (late December).

受講にあたって欧州政治思想史や世界史の知識があることが望ましいが、とくに必須とはしない。必要に応じて教員が補足説明などをおこなう。
モンテスキューの『法の精神』（1748年）を輪読し、作品の内容だけでなく現代の政治や社会を考えるうえでのヒントについても議論する。また、個人研究を通じて自分なりの問題意識と見解をもち、読解力・調査力・分析力を鍛える。
We will read Montesquieu's Esprit des lois (1748), discussing not only the work itself but also insights it offers for considering our contemporary politics and society. Additionally, through individual research, students will develop their own critical awareness and perspectives while improving their reading comprehension, research, and analytical skills.
教科書や概説書の記述においては三権分立の命題ばかりが強調されるモンテスキューであるが、実際のところ彼の書いた『法の精神』には極めて多様な内容が含まれている。各地域の風土や習俗をめぐる考察、アジアへの関心、人口論や家族論、古代と近代の比較、商業社会の認識など、縦横無尽に広がるその議論の射程には驚くべきものがある。本演習では、18世紀ヨーロッパの啓蒙思想からアメリカの合衆国憲法、フランス革命に至るまで多大な影響を与えたこの思想家の代表作を輪読し、その重厚な思考の蓄積に可能な限り触れてみたい。
また本演習では、単に文献を輪読するだけでなく、個人研究に基づくプレゼンテーションもおこなってもらう。さらに他大学との合同ゼミやインカレのプレゼン大会（12月下旬）への出場も予定している。
