The British journalist and writer George Orwell (1903-1950), by the end of World War II, worried that a different, more terrifying future might emerge—unlike most intellectuals who optimistically celebrated the victory of freedom and democracy following Nazi Germany's defeat. He feared the advent of a surveillance and control society where freedom and democracy existed only in name, with propaganda and information manipulation dominating even the innermost thoughts of individuals. More than half a century later, it is often pointed out that nations, particularly those called advanced, are moving closer to an Orwellian world.
In this seminar, we will critically examine the current state of the contemporary world and its future possibilities by reading and analyzing Orwell's two masterpieces, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, which are guided by the above awareness of the issues and often regarded as the pinnacle of 20th-century dystopian novels. Active participation and thoughtful contributions from students with a keen sense of critical inquiry are encouraged.

イギリスのジャーナリスト・作家であるジョージ・オーウェル (1903-1950) は、第二次世界大戦が終わる頃、ナチス・ドイツの敗北を受けて自由と民主主義の勝利を楽観的に謳い上げる大半の知識人たちとはちがって、形を変えた別のもっと恐ろしい未来がやって来るのではないか、と案じていた。プロパガンダや情報操作によって、心の内面までもが権力に支配された、自由や民主主義とは名ばかりの監視統制社会が到来するのではないか、と。それから半世紀以上が経ち、とりわけ先進国と呼ばれる国々が、オーウェル的世界に近づいている、としばしば指摘されるようになっている。
本演習では、上記のような問題意識のもとに執筆された、二〇世紀におけるディストピア小説の最高峰とも評される、オーウェルの二つの代表作『動物農場』と『一九八四年』を読み解きながら、現代世界の現状とその未来のあり方について批判的に考察していく。問題意識の旺盛な学生の積極的な発言が歓迎される。
