Maruyama Masao's ‘Loyalty and Treason’, published in 1960, a year that marked a major turning point in post-war Japanese politics, is a paper that condenses ideas about the fragility of the political system, citizens' participation in politics, and the historically formed spiritual climate of Japan, and it is a complex mixture of academic analysis and contemporary political concerns. We will carefully read this paper, investigate the background to its writing, and examine the author's intentions and intellectual background.
We will read and discuss ‘Loyalty and Treason’ by Maruyama Masao, analysing and discussing the political issues of post-war Japan, the ideological penetration of democracy, and the historical foundations of people's political thinking, while specifically referring to the terminology and sources of quotations in the text.Knowledge of classical Japanese or Chinese is not required. I will provide detailed explanations as we go along so that participants can understand if they can read modern Japanese. I ask participants to be proactive in raising questions and engaging in discussion.

1960年という戦後日本政治の大きな転換期に発表された、丸山眞男「忠誠と反逆」は、政治体制の脆弱性、大衆の政治参加、日本の精神的土壌についてのアイデアが凝縮された論文であり、学術的な分析と同時代的な政治的関心が複雑にからみあっている。この論文を丁寧に読み、その記述の背景を調べ、著者の意図と知的背景を検討する。

丸山眞男「忠誠と反逆」を講読し、具体的にテクストの用語や引用文の典拠を踏まえながら、そこで議論されている、戦後日本の政治的課題、民主主義の思想的浸透度、人々の政治的思考の歴史的な基礎について、分析し、討論する。古文・漢文などの知識は求めない。現代日本語が読めれば分かるように解説を加えながら進めていく。積極的に疑問を提起し、討論する姿勢を参加者に求める。
