【Course Objectives】

The objective of this seminar is to cultivate students’ ability to identify important issues in contemporary international society and to think critically about how such issues can be understood and addressed through independent research in international politics.

Students are expected to formulate their own research questions, review relevant literature, collect and analyze data, construct hypotheses, and develop well-grounded arguments. While no strict limitations are placed on the choice of time period, region, or subfield, research topics should primarily focus on issues related to regions commonly referred to as the Global South, or international political issues that are deeply connected to these regions.

The seminar imposes one common requirement: each research project must incorporate a historical perspective. To establish this shared foundation, the early part of the seminar is devoted to a collective examination of the premise that “History matters.” Through theoretical readings, engagement with historical materials, and class discussions, students will explore why and how historical perspectives are essential for understanding and explaining contemporary political phenomena. Building on this foundation, students will then proceed to develop their own research projects, incorporating historical perspectives into their individual analyses.

【Course Contents】

This seminar consists of two main phases.

In the first phase (approximately Weeks 1–4), the course establishes a shared analytical perspective based on the premise that “History matters.” Through theoretical readings, engagement with historical materials, and class discussions, students examine how history contributes to the understanding of contemporary international politics. History is approached not as a mere background or accumulation of facts, but as a force that shapes institutional legacies, dominant ways of seeing the world, and political emotions. During this phase, students will also work with primary-source databases such as State Papers Online to explore how historical documents are connected to contemporary political perceptions and discourses.

In the second phase (Week 5 onward), students pursue independent research projects based on their individual interests. Research topics primarily focus on regions commonly referred to as the Global South, or international political issues that are deeply connected to these regions. Through research presentations and discussions, students develop their projects while examining how historical perspectives are incorporated into their analyses. Ongoing discussion with the instructor and peers is intended to refine research questions, analytical frameworks, and methodological approaches.
