Even though more than eighty years have passed since the end of the war, there are still many views and active discussions about the causes and nature of the Pacific War. Therefore, this seminar will cover the period from the opening of the country during the Tokugawa shogunate to the end of the war with the objective of focusing on foreign policy and war to discuss the course of modern Japan from an awareness of the problems involving why and how Japan reached the point of the Pacific War. In particular, the instructor would like to examine the international order in East Asia, war, the relationship between foreign policy and military affairs, and also focus on historical awareness while considering global trends.
During the spring semester, students will read in turn the fundamental literature relating to the topic and engage in discussions based on reports. During the fall semester, each participant will select a specific topic, present the results of their inquiry, and engage in discussion.

昨年10月、戦後80年に際して、石破茂総理大臣は、「戦後80年に寄せて」と題した見解を公表した。石破総理の問題意識は、「なぜあの戦争を避けることができなかったのか」という点にあった。一方、太平洋戦争の原因・性格をめぐっては、戦後80年以上経過した現在でも様々な見解があり、活発な議論がなされています。そこで、本演習では、なぜ、またどのようにして日本は太平洋戦争に至ったのかという問題意識から、幕末の開国から終戦までの時期を対象として、近代日本の歩みを外交と戦争に焦点を当てて議論することを目的とします。特に、世界の動向に配慮しつつ、東アジアにおける国際秩序、戦争、外交と軍事の関係、さらに歴史認識にも焦点を当てて検討したいと思います。

春学期は、テーマに関連する基本的な文献を輪読、報告を踏まえて議論を行います。秋学期は、参加者各人が具体的なテーマを選定し、考察の結果を発表、議論を行います。
During the spring semester, students will read in turn the fundamental literature relating to the topic and engage in discussions based on reports. During the fall semester, each participant will select a specific topic, present the results of their inquiry, and engage in discussion.
