In this seminar, the students will theoretically and philosophically address the relationship between media and politics. However, journalism and current coverage are matters of no concern to this seminar. Rather, the purpose here is to study the original meaning of media, that is, the representation and medium of things. From the perspective of social thought, we will discuss what kind of power, freedom, or protests exist when things and matters are represented rather than directly presented.
For the first half of the seminar, we will read basic texts introducing theoretical and intellectual aspects of media to learn about Frankfurt School, Mechanical Reproduction, McLuhan, New Media, Platform Capitalism, and so forth. For the second half of the seminar, we will read studies of museums as examples of the media. Through an analysis of media spaces including art galleries, museums, zoos, botanical gardens, monuments, and world expositions, this course examines and discusses key concepts in modern and contemporary politics and culture―such as the Industrial Revolution, colonialism, modernization, the public sphere, consumer society, globalization, and protest movements.

本演習ではメディアと文化、政治の関係について理論的・哲学的な観点から議論します。ただし、ジャーナリズムや時事報道について直接扱うわけではありません。ここでの目的は、メディアのもともとの意味、すなわち物事を媒介し、表象する作用について学ぶことです。物事を直接提示するのではなく、再現前＝表象するとき、どのような権力や自由、抵抗が生じるのかを、社会思想の観点から議論します。

授業前半ではメディアについて、理論的・思想的側面から解説した入門テクストを読みます。フランクフルト学派、複製技術論、マクルーハン、ニューメディア、プラットフォーム資本主義といったことについて基礎的に学びます。後半ではそうした知識を前提に、具体的なメディア装置であるミュージアムを事例として扱った研究書を読みます。美術館、博物館、動物園、植物園、記念碑、博覧会といったメディア空間を通じて、産業革命や植民地支配、近代化、公共性、消費社会、グローバル化、抗議運動など近現代の政治と文化の重要概念を学びます。
