【Course Objectives】

The aims of this course are to explore realities of multiculturalism in contemporary Japan and to increase our awareness of the dynamics of racial/ethnic, gender/sexual, and class differences in the situated society. We will examine relations of difference and inequality in everyday practice and consider how to make a difference to realize the Japanese form of integration. For this purpose, we will take account of various positions on the issue of human rights and identity politics, in terms of the interrelationship of blood/lineage, ethnicity, and nationality. Throughout we will deliberate on the following two aspects usually overlooked in the current minority controversy: the intra-group diversity and the multiplicity of social identity.

【Course Contents】

The course will consist of lectures and guided discussions, as well as various forms of multimedia. Preparation before class and active participation in class discussions are required. The class will be very interactive, including group project, discussion and presentation. Students are encouraged to transcend politically correct silencing and actively exchange multiple perspectives. Thereby, we will think critically about the legitimacy of certain images of “different” groups of people, and will seek possible solutions to integrate various “differences” into ethnically and socially diversifying Japan.
