【Course Objectives】

[Knowledge] Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the key economic events in Japanese history. They will learn about the distinctive characteristics of Japanese economic history and the features it shares with other economies. Students will also examine how historical developments have shaped contemporary Japan.

[Critical thinking skills] Through the analysis of historical cases and economic events, students will learn to develop critical thinking skills to evaluate historical interpretations and arguments. The course encourages students to use AI effectively while critically evaluating its output.

[Discussion Skills] Students will improve their ability to engage in constructive academic discussions in English.

【Course Contents】

The course content includes lectures, discussions, group activities, and short assignments. Japanese Economic History 1 covers the Edo and Meiji periods, and Japanese Economic History 2 covers the Taisho and Showa periods through the 1950s. The order of the weekly topics may be adjusted to optimize the learning experience.

【授業時間外(予習・復習等)の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

Students are expected to complete the assigned readings before each class meeting and to participate in class discussions actively. Students should allocate at least two hours for preparation and two hours for review for each class. 毎週、授業前に指定された教材を読んだ上で出席し、積極的に発言すること。各回の予習および復習には、それぞれ最低2時間ずつ確保すること。成績には発言点を含む。

Students are required to attend at least two-thirds of all class meetings to receive course credit. Students must submit original work. Plagiarism, the inappropriate use or submission of AI-generated content, and any other forms of academic dishonesty will be subject to severe penalties. Submitting identical or substantially similar work for different courses is also considered an academic offense. Students retaking the course should not resubmit work that was submitted in previous semesters. Papers with high Turnitin AI scores or similarity scores will, in principle, not be accepted. 単位取得には、全授業回数の3分の2以上の出席が必要。提出物は自ら作成したものを提出すること。剽窃、AI生成物の不適切な利用、その他の不正行為は罰則の対象とする。他の授業に提出した課題と同一または、実質的に同一の内容を再提出することも不正行為とみなす(自己剽窃)。本科目を再履修する場合、過去の学期に提出した課題を再度提出することは認めない。Turnitin による AI 判定スコアまたは類似性判定スコアが高い提出物は、原則として受理しない。

Students must also demonstrate a strong commitment to academic honesty; plagiarism and the inappropriate use of AI-generated content will not be permitted. 本科目は、英語圏の大学の授業と同様の形式で行い、多様な背景をもつ学生とともに学ぶ機会を提供する。こうした学修環境に関心のある学生の履修を歓迎する。単位取得にあたって求められるのは、特別に高度な英語力ではなく、母語で培った読解力・思考力、基礎的な学力、そして十分な学修時間を確保する姿勢である。履修にあたっては、学期開始前に指定教材を確認し、内容が自身の関心や英語力に適しているかを判断すること。また、小論文の基本的な書き方や引用方法について、基礎ゼミ等で学修した内容を理解しておくこと。学期中は文献をすべて読み、授業内の討論や課題に主体的に取り組むこと。
