By the end of this course, you will be able to:
1. Analyze stakeholders and apply ethical frameworks. Analyze a business decision from multiple stakeholder perspectives, including stakeholders who are silent, geographically distant, or not yet born, and apply ethical frameworks to the trade-offs it surfaces.
2. Compare competing views of corporate purpose. Compare contrasting accounts of what business is for and what it owes to society, from shareholder primacy to stakeholder capitalism.
3. Read demographic and technological transitions. Evaluate how demographic change and artificial intelligence are reshaping the relationship between firms and the societies they operate in.
This course examines how the relationship between business and society is being reshaped by factors such as demographic change, artificial intelligence, and the rising power of athletes, artists, and creators. Across the semester you will work through core questions about what firms are for, what they owe to others, and what it means to lead in a turbulent global environment. You will analyze contested business-society questions using rigorous frameworks drawn from current research and contemporary examples.

| This course is taught in lecture format with active-learning elements appropriate to a large undergraduate section. Methods include instructor-led lectures on theory and current events, structured in-class discussion, small-group activities, contemporary examples, audiovisual materials, and Canvas LMS for reflection prompts, supplementary readings, and announcements. Two in-class tests (midterm and final) anchor assessment, and class participation in discussion and group work is graded across the semester. |
You are expected to read materials and watch any assigned videos before each session, complete short Canvas reflections as assigned, and engage with current-events material that the instructor will flag through Canvas. Approximately 4 hours per week of preparation and review.

| Supplemental readings, including articles, book chapters, and current-events material, will be distributed by the instructor via Canvas LMS on a session-by-session basis. Reading lists will be finalized session-by-session and refreshed each year. |
You should be comfortable participating in discussion and small-group work conducted in English. The course carries the Sheltered Course designation (minimum TOEIC 730). No prior business coursework is required.
Bring a notebook PC or tablet to each session. Canvas will be the home for all materials, reflections, and assignment submission.
This syllabus reflects the course as planned at the time of preparation. The instructor reserves the right to make minor adjustments to materials based on current events, with any changes communicated promptly through Canvas.
USE OF AI AND GENERATIVE AI TOOLS
This course treats large language models (LLMs) as a strategic thinking partner: a tool to expand your analytical capability, without replacing your judgment. This policy reflects an approach the instructor has used in past undergraduate and graduate programs.
Green Light (default). Unless an assignment explicitly states otherwise, you are welcome to use AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, or others) for research, brainstorming, structural outlining, drafting feedback, and synthesizing background material.
Red Light (by exception). Some assignments are designed to test foundational skills that require individual effort. In those instances, the assignment instructions will state explicitly: "AI use is prohibited for this assignment." The Midterm test and Final test (both in-class) are Red Light by default.
Disclosure requirement. When you use AI on a Green Light assignment, briefly note (i) the tool, (ii) what you used it for, and (iii) what remained your own work. This disclosure is part of academic integrity in this course. Disclosed AI use is not penalized; undisclosed AI use is.
