This course is a practical introduction to a few signature theories in corporate finance, (i.e. efficient markets hypothesis, option pricing model, portfolio theory, and asset pricing). A brief introduction to prospect theory and behavioural finance, generally, is also presented as an contrast to conventional finance theories.
This course explores the application of these theories in the real world. As part of this exploration, we consider the role of governments in distorting the workings of financial markets, the impact of derivatives, and the unintended consequences of passive investing, hedge funds, and the increased role of quantitative trading. We concluded with some advice on job opportunities are for those interested in a career in finance.
After the class, students should have a basic understanding of corporate finance theory and how they work (or not work) in the real world.
