【Course Objectives】

Bram Stoker's Dracula, written in late 19th-century Britain (the author was Irish), is more than just a novel of horror; it is the work that implies political and social issues that are still important and pressing in the twenty-first century. In this seminar, we will use this material to examine and discuss issues such as immigration, xenophobia, anti-semitism, masculine perspective, psychiatry, war, the decline of the British Empire and the rise of the United States, and sanitary and pandemic.

【Course Contents】

In this seminar, we will read Tanji Ai's Dracula Syndrome, a critical and research book that examines Stoker's Dracula in detail, rather than Stoker's Dracula itself. It is recommended, but not required, that students read Stoker's original work by the beginning of the fall semester. The first and second classes will be devoted to an introduction to the content and historical background of Dracula. Thereafter, we will read Dracula Syndrome.
